Philip Somervell é um músico que atua nos campos do experimental e da improvisação. Com raízes na Inglaterra e Chile, chegou em São Paulo em 2014, onde a música feita com eletrônicos surgiu como mais uma faceta do seu trabalho – até então desenvolvido primordialmente com piano/piano preparado.

‘Formwork’, seu primeiro release solo pela Brava, consiste em 4 faixas usando computador Monome Norns Shield, sampler granular, sintetizador e feedback, intercalando 2 faixas mais curtas, com menos de 3 minutos, com 2 mais longas, passando dos 15 minutos cada.

Dentre essas, ‘Ply’ une uma bateria industrial movida por algoritmo tocando samples de drum machine a um vocal nebuloso digitalmente cortado em pedaços minúsculos, e sintetizadores e drones de feedback instáveis. Em ‘Slab’, uma peça nova é criada em base a um sample de um coral de câmara esticado a um passo glacial e processado junto aos graves de um sintetizador.

Philip Somervell is a musician working in the fields of experimental and improvised music. With roots in England and Chile, he arrived in São Paulo in 2014, where music made using electronics emerged as another facet of his work – which until then had developed primarily with prepared piano/piano.

'Formwork', his first solo release on Brava, consists of 4 tracks using the Monome Norns Shield computer, granular sampler, synthesizer and feedback, interspersing 2 shorter tracks which run under 3 minutes, with 2 longer ones, both passing the 15-minute mark.

Among these, 'Ply' brings together an algorithm-driven industrial drum machine with a hazy vocal digitally sliced into tiny pieces and synthesizer and feedback drones. In 'Slab', a new piece is created based on a sample of a chamber choir stretched to a glacial pace and processed alongside a synthesizer bass.
